TCC / Colloquium Constraining Cosmology through the Growth of Structure: New Results from the South Pole Telescope [abstract] The South Pole Telescope (SPT) recently completed a 2500 square degree survey of the sky in the 3mm, 2mm and 1.4 mm bands to measure the intrinsic and secondary anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background with unprecedented resolution and sensitivity. In addition to improved cosmological constraints from extending the measurements of the CMB power spectrum into the damping tail, the arcminute resolution and multi-band data is used to extend cosmological constraints by measuring the impact of growth of structure on the anisotropy on fine angular scales. For example, the data allows improved constraints on the nature of dark energy and the number and masses of the neutrinos. This talk will review the SPT and several of the new results. Emphasis will be given to the results derived the sample of high-redshift, massive galaxy clusters discovered in the SPT data by their Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect. |
